Some friends and I are making a movie and we'd like to use a song in the credits... We sure don't want to break any copyright laws. Who should we try contacting?

Contact the record company that recorded the song and explain to them what you're up to. They in turn would most likely have their legal staff give you some kind of written authorization to use the song or maybe even have you pay some kind of fee.

Contact the song writer. You do not need a copyright if you aren't going to make any money from the movie that you're making. If there's money to be made at all, then you need a copyright.
