This is related to at least one other active question but it has a different thrust. Courts are blocking laws that require a photo ID to vote. Some have claimed that virtually no proven voter fraud is going on. On the other side I would challenge someone to prove that more than a handful of people are unable to produce a photo ID. You need a photo ID to drive -- that rules out all drivers. You need a photo ID to cash a check -- that rules out anyone who gets a legitimate paycheck. This leaves people who have never driven and never received a check or entered a bar or bought liquor or done any of the myriad of things essential to life in the United States that requires a photo ID. I think this leaves severely mentally retarded people. Who are these citizens who don't have photo IDs and how do they get along without one?

If you live in a city with public transportation you don't need a photo id. Subway, taxi, bus. Some of the major cities it's not even cost effective to have a car, so one would not need a driver's license if one never drives. Not everyone in this country is a consumer of alcohol, or a frequenter of night clubs. And in the smaller towns, which apply to me, you do not need a photo id to cash a check. And last time I checked, with your atm cards, even though some of them have pictures on them now, you can use them, even in the larger cities to get cash and don't ever have to write a check. I do not have a picture ID, and I assure you even the severly mentally retarded would be offended, because I work with several, and they all do have picture id's.

I lived for 5 years without a photo id. Just got one the other day. For part of that time I had no income at all so yes it would have been expensive for me to get one. I was very ill so naturally it was a bad idea for me to drink alcohol, at home or in a bar. I had no car so who needs a license?
When I received my Social Security Disability, I had the check deposited into the bank, and used the debit card and cash for purchases. The card did not have my picture on it.
I could not cash checks but that was not a big hardship for a person with v. little money.
When I was going through rehab I met many people who had less id than I did. I at least had a library card, the debit card and an expired ID from a state I used to live in. Some people had nothing.
You don't need an ID to cash a paycheck. Where I live, when I last worked, they encouraged everyone to have their paychecks deposited directly into a bank. Then you set up and automatic bill pay deal with the bank. My current bank is always telling me how much postage I can save doing this but since I have so little money, I have only a few bills and the savings is not significant.
I think you have not traveled outside your own way of life much. I would not wish on you the journey of discovery I've been on in the last five years, if you sincerely mean your last question. That is Do you really want to know how the other half lives? It's not necessary to take the fall yourself, there are books and articles (Google the writer Katherine Boo, she has done some great stuff on the disenfranchised in the last few years.) that can do it for you.
And lastly, this, the last time I looked was America. Land of the Brave and Home of the Free and I don't wanna be mistreated by no boozwazee. Americans don't carry internal passports. Americans don't report their whereabouts to the police. Americans don't have to carry no stinking badges.

You dont need a photo ID to cash a check. How do you think a lot of illegal immigrants are able to come here and work without an ID?
There are at least two stores that I know of in my city alone that will cash your check without an ID

Proof? Not to me but it an affirmation of what I have known. for years. When Bob Dornan of Orange County lost his congressional seat he proved beyond a doubt that illegals had voted in the election and nothing was done about it. It's past time to require a state issued ID before you're allowed to vote.

i believe that the people the politicians are worried about, the ones committing vote fraud, will not own up to having a photo ID even if they own one. I agree with you that virtually everyone has one, so is requiring them to use it really that much of an infringement?

You are absoutely correct now a days you must identify yourself if you need something done. I suggest you go to your near motor vehicles office and obtain a id. It is very inexpensive.

You can indeed "live." No one will shoot you. You will have a pulse, take in air, eat food and poop on schedule. You will be alive.

Now... if you want to FUNCTION, if you want to take advantage of the benefits of the world around you... that's another story.
