The British taxed the colonists on almost everything, but what really riled the colonists was the tax on tea. That was what prompted the Boston Tea Party, and that led, ultimately, to the formation of the United States of America as an independent nation.

The british tried to tax tea, and any imported goods that were shipped anywhere but from england, had to be shipped through england where english ships loaded them and then sent them to america where a hefty price was already put on. Basicly they tried to tax everything.
and for everyone not explaining what the stamp act was, it was a tax that said that any parchment that was official or published had to have a stamp from the british government. that was a good way of taxing the people. however it really didn't go over very well for the british, it was circumvented and almost a joke to the colonists.

Your big answer is going to be tea, but in reality the tax on tea was higher in Britain than it was here in the States. A lot of things got taxed, especially imports from countries besides Britain. The goal was to have the colonists to be dependant on Britain for goods and services.
