A Beta. They are beautiful and don't need large tanks. Or filters. Or heaters. Goldfish need a filter. They do three things well. 1. They look pretty. 2. they eat. 3. they poop, a lot. So they need a filter or you'll be cleaning the tank a lot. And don't use a heater for them either, besides being a cool water fish, over a certain temperature, their waste breaks down more quickly causing the tank to become full of amonia.

Beta fish are good without a filter, especially for first time fish owners, they can be put in relatively small tanks with some rocks and maybe a plant and be ok, pretty easy maintanence/feeding.

A male betta would be your best bet...you can keep them in a small bowl without a problem.
Although you don't need a filter, you absolutely do need WATER CONDITIONER...this is important because the chlorine that is put in drinking water is toxic to the fish. A small bottle of water conditioner costs like $3-$4 and will last you a long time! Good luck and enjoy your fish!

I would go with the beta, if I were you. It does not need a tank and filter. It is an awsome looking fish, and loaded with character for a fish! You can get this fish to take food from the service of your finger tip or teach it with hamburger meat to jump out of the bowl and grab.
Be sure if you teach him to jump for his food that you have a screen to slide over his bowl when you aren't standing there to feed him.
Anyway, enojoy your beta or what ever you choose.
Good Luck and Take Care

a beta but i would get a female too so he isnt lonely - i dont care if it is a fish
and i beleive gold fish dont need filters but they put out amonia in the water so u have to keep them with gold fish-
and u may want to condition your water even though the fish doesnt require a filter, and change the water weekly or consider getting a plant for oxygen

A Betta... they don't even like moving water... just make sure you get only one... or at least.. one per tank... whats better: you don't need a fish tank.. you can put him inside a water plant's vase or anywhere you can fit a little water...

Beta Fish. You need a plant for the top of the bowl.
I've had my beta fish for four months now and he's doing great.
