I just saw the original Jaws for the first time last night and I found it more comical then anthing else. This movie is a joke, but a lot of my friends call it a classic. Just thought Id see what everyone else was thinking.

Yeah, it's cheesy now, but back in the mid-'70s when it came out, it was ahead of its time. The music really helps set the suspenseful mood. And, the shark, believe it or not, was ahead of its time back in the '70s.

The reason why you considered it comical is because you must see a lot of horror flicks in your time. Since this is the point, you can't appreciate "Jaws" as a movie. This movie made people think twice before going into the water for a very long time. A huge white shark is an uneding nightmare for a small town including the ones trying to kill him.

One of the reasons why it's a classic film is because you know something bad is going to happen 'cause of the music cue. But the difference is that everything happens so fast paced when the kill happens a lot people would jump at the seat, fearing it was comming right for us next.

A true classic movie does this to people. The main conflict is the shark attacks that could happen in real life but without hearing the cue. Stop and imagine you are in the ocean just for a casual swim in the summer. Next thing you know a shark attacks someone nearby without any warning your reaction is for anyone to laugh but fear of being the next victim.

By the end of movie, you don't know if the shark is dead or knocked out by the blast. The fear of another possible attack is still out there. You know the shark is a huge problem when someone tells you'll need a bigger boat just to kill him. Maybe next time you should watch the movie alone with the lights off...

Yes, Jaws is considered a classic. It was the first movie of it's kind with the sound an dspecial effects. Not too mention the cast who have gone on to do even more powerful films.

Holy freaking moly!!
You finding a movie to be "comical " or "a joke" aren't really guidelines used to determine if a movie is a classic. Thank goodness.

because its over around 30 years old.....it was pretty innovative at the time. Try to remember they didn't have computer graphics at the time........another one you might want to consider is "Close Encounter Of The Third Kind" truly a classic and there has never been anything quite like it......

I agree with you, I think it's funny... but I do know a few that it terrifies, if I dare to admit that. I think it's a classic because it was good back in the day.
