Yes they did, they had to construct shelter, sometimes out of sod and half a hole in the ground. They had to detect and gather food, kill it first if it was alive. They had to provide everything like fuel, often using buffalo or cow droppings.
They had no shampoo, no medicine, no means of communication other than person to person. There was not even mail service. If their stagecoach or horse broke down, it was up to them to fix or replace it. The only companionship they had was the family. The children had no toys, they had to make them. They had to plan ahead for severe winters when they might not leave the house for weeks or months, due to a thick blanket of snow.
I read O Pioneers! by Willa Cather at an impressionable age, and the images it brought to me have never left. I highly recommend it, if you want to learn more.

Of course they did that was back in the good old days where you had 2 grow your food & hunt 4 it otherwise you starved 2 death
