Wow, you're a life saver. If it weren't for people like you, the world would be so much worse. Of course, its up to you if you want to continue. But sacrifice is what it's all about.

If you love what you do and feel satisfied at the end of the day, that your contributions to society have been helpful, then I would not quit. There are councelors that will help you unwind and cope and learn to detatch to some extent, from the feelings you have that stress you out within this position.
What you do is so wonderful and the lives that you impact, no matter how severe or simple the emergency, has to be so rewarding and you are greatly needed. Of course you will get stressed out, its hard to deal with those life and death situations that arrise once in a while, but to do it every day must be overwhelming at times, so just try to remember why you do it and think about the good you are doing to help others in need who have no where else to go in that instant that your phone rings. You are their life line and their hope. If you are having severe health issues because of your job however, you need to seek help for yourself and make sure you can physically continue. You cant put your own life or health on the line and expect to be able to continue this for very long. Its hard to be productive when you are not at your best health both in body and soul.

I'm sure part of your stress comes from people not knowing when and when not to call 911... I have heard of people calling 911 for reasons that are obviously not emergencies. I think it would also be stressful to be on the other line with someone who is experiencing an emergency- they are frantic, hard to talk to, and hard to hear. They are usually crying and upset, yelling, and trying to talk to other people at the same time. But please remember that you are the one person that they are counting on to get them through it. I think that being a 911 operator would be a very rewarding job, knowing that at the end of the day, you have helped so many people.

I thought about doing that but I was afriad that sitting in a chair fo 12 hours straight and straing a conputer screen with only a break for lunch here and there would be too much for me. Are you stressed because of the physical demands? Not enought excersie. too much junk food? (that would be what would do me in) Or are you stressed because you are channeling the emotions of the calls? You have to be neutral and make other people stay calm. It sounds easy but I am sure it is not. I applaud you for what you do. Is there a way you could take a leave of absense with out quitting?

wow!what an admirable job!
however if you feel stressed out that should not be the only reason to quit. You can find an outlet, seek counselling, have a vacation and try to identify what about it relly burns you out because if after doing all these and you're still stressed out then it's a big decision but only you can answer how much you can take.

Well, it depends on how bad it is effecting your overall health. Stress can take a very damaging toll and can lead to very serious health problems. First thing you need to ask yourself is if you can afford to just quit your job and have zero income. I do suggest that you search for other less stressful jobs before making any sudden decisions. Find a back up first and then quit when you find one. Your health is more important then a career/job. Hope this helps.

thank you for doning a great job.
most operators go unnotice, so keep up the great work.
use the consueling services they ofter, or transfer to a differ town, most big city's are more stressfull then a small midwest town.
just don't quit, take a vaction relax recharge yourself. then decide if it is worth to leave or stay.
Good Luck
and again thank you
