My girlfriend is nine months and tired of being pregnant. Is there anything she can do to help start labor herself? She doesn't want the doctors to induce but as of 2 weeks ago the baby was 80% effaced and 1 centermeter dialated.

Sex, more specifically semen. The gel used to stimulate the cervix is from pig semen and contains hormones that stimulate the cervix into dilation. Be gentle, she's probably uncomfortable, but it works. I 'induced' 2 labors that way, went into labor before morning.

Also, short walks and standing (get that baby to put his head down and put pressure on the cervix = stimulation of effacement).

Oh and nipple stimulation, which she may or may not enjoy.

Make sure she's eating small, healthy meals frequently. If she goes into labor and goes to the hospital, most will not allow her anything but ice chips and maybe chicken broth until after delivery. She'll need that energy if her labor is long enough.

All of the above assumes she's pretty close to her due date. Sex will not in most cases stimulate labor too early. Her body is smarter than that. Though, in high risk pregnancies, doctors tend to encourage sexual abstinence in part due to that stimulation. I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv.

i drank castor oil w/ no problems; the idea had been told to me by a friend of my moms who had no problems and for who it worked also.

from dr spocks website:

Natural Ways to Induce Labor

Castor oil
For decades, women have been using castor oil to help induce labor. In fact, many old school physicians and midwives swear by it. It can provide good results if you are already in early labor. It is believed to work by causing spasms in the intestines, which surround the uterus toward the end of pregnancy. These spasms, in turn, cause the uterus to cramp, which might result in labor.

You can take 1 to 4 ounces of castor oil mixed with 6 ounces of orange juice to cut its oiliness. You'll want to drink it quickly because of the unpleasant taste. Some practitioners suggest taking a single dose; others suggest repeated doses depending on your response. Keep in mind that castor oil usually will cause your bowels to empty within about three hours. With luck, soon after that, you will be in true labor.

(have her take ex-lax the night before to empty her bowels)

if the baby is ready, it will come. if it doesn't work, the baby isn't ready yet.

good luck!

don't help make her go into labor her body will do it herself when it is ready. If you try to make your body go into labor to soon it hurt the baby very bad. DO NOT and I mean DO NOT let her drink castoil it will make the baby slide down to fast and could kill it. Tell her to bundle up and walk walk walk this will help her body dialate and This will help BIG time when she goes into labor. I walked alot while I was pregnant and I was in labor for only 9 hours and pushed 4 times.

castor oil might do the trick or it might just cause really bad diarrhea. i drank raspberry leaf tea for two days and it did the trick. also, making her have an orgasm can cause her uterus to go into contractions. walking helps or gently bouncing on the bed.(because of the gravitational force on her cervux.) also, getting into a warm shower and stimulating her nipples (rubbing, licking and sucking) will release a hormone that sets off labor!!! Good Luck and Congrats to the both of you.

Okay...don't listen to the advice about going snowmobiling. Number one, that's not rigorous activity since you're sitting and number two, a pregnant woman shouldn't be doing something that is potentially dangerous.

What worked for me was lots of water, walking and hot sauce!

My friend was told that she needed to be on bedrest... she's 9months and the baby weighs only 5lbs and somewad... but she's a small girl... but she was told to definately stay off her feet... I guess she went BOWLING (lol... this is weird but ya i dunno just telling ya something that MAY help may not, but at least u'll have fun)... and the next morning she woke up having contractions... alotta MOVEMENT like walking and whatever is said to cause contractions as far as I've always been told... maybe you can look online...

*www.allexperts.com Go under Parenting/Family ... Pregnancy/Birth... and then maybe go to the ObGyn/Pregnancy issues and Click on the one you want to ask the question to... maybe they can assist you better in letting you know what causes contractions...
But like i said as far as i know it's MOVEMENT! Cuz it causes like stress and what not...
