Get a good tree ID book that specifically shows bark. The red pine will look like it has ski tracks down the tree. Also red pine will have stiff needles. White pine has soft needles in bundles of 5. The key is in the bark and the pinecone. A good book will give you a picture of the bark and the pine cone.
