I am not asking for the answer...I am asking how to solve this problem as to help my daughter in solving it...we are taking a practice test online and according to the test 42 is not the correct answer since that is what we thought it was originally as well. Thank you to all that has attempted to help me understand this.

Give yourself more credit...Although it would be nice if the teachers of our world were 100% accurate 100% of the time--this is unfeasible. And the person who data entered your daughter's test was probably less educated than your daughter. That said...these answer keys do have errors so 42 is the correct answer.

Homework help and test taking is frustrating enough without flawed answer keys. Take a deep breath...really...and begin a new.

Lucky daughter to have a mom like you!

Alright,
Five less than half a number means we do division first so than we subtract 5 from it and get 16
n/2 - 5 = 16
n/2 = 21
n = 42

you need to work backwards.
if 16 is 5 less than half of a number n,
then half of n is 16+ 5 =21.
therefore n is twice of 21, 21x2 = 42
my wife also has trouble with this,
i hope that this explaination will help in other problems of this type.
God bless, gabe

I would break this down into a formula:
n/2 - 5 =16
then solve n...
n/2=16 + 5
n/2=21
n=21 * 2
n= 42

42 is your answer

Somebody needs to do his own homework. You're probably not gonna learn by having someone else tell you the answer.
