First of all, you'll need a portfolio. And not one full of photos taken by your friends. Go to a professional photographer who will know how to show you in the best possible light -- literally.
Your portfolio should include at least one head shot where you're looking right into the camera and at least one full-length shot, and it should contain both color and black-and-white photos. Wear fashionable clothes, but go for "timeless" over "trendy" -- plain t-shirts with jeans, plain oxford shirts with dark-colored dress pants -- styles that won't look "dated" a couple of months after the photos are taken.
You'll want at least two sets of 18-24 8"x10" photos -- one set for you to keep and the other(s) to bring with you when you visit modeling agencies, either by responding to ads or by looking them up in your local yellow pages (on- or off-line). Put them in nice (not necessarily expensive) photo albums (discount stores like Wal-Mart carry them), one photo per page. Put a printed (not handwritten) label on the inside cover with your name, contact info, and vital statistics (age, height, weight, hair color, eye color). It's a good idea to put a label on the back of each photo with just your name and phone number, too.
Another thing you can do is call or visit local art schools, and/or the art departments of any local colleges, to see if they need models (paid or volunteer). It's not glamorous work, but it will help you get used to some of the non-glamorous aspects of modeling -- long hours on your feet (or other parts of your body), holding poses, and being stared at by strangers.
Best of luck to you.

I would say start sending your pictures to local modeling agencies. Go to open calls. Maybe go on onemodelplace.com and start doing TFP (time for pictures/photos). While you will be modeling for a photographer for free, you will be building up a portfolio to show agencies. Hope that helps.

first see if you fit the requirements (heights and measurements) then go to local agencies with headshots, side portfolio and body shot and ask them if you have the potential to model... DO NOT WATCH ZOOLANDER THAT's THE GAYEST THING YOU COULD DO....
