Try this, put a couple drops of each on a piece of glass and let them evaporate. Now which spot looks cleaner? It will be the acetone.
Gasoline is a darn good cleaner for heavy grime, but finish it off with acetone. Of course neither is very safe, they both ignite easily. One consideration is the cost, acetone is about 4 times as expensive. Be careful to not make any, and I mean any, metal to metal sparks. Have a running garden hose nearby if you are cleaning something in a pan. For welding, it probably doesn't matter what you use. The heat will do the cleaning. A wire brush, a hand grinder, a file or coarse emery paper is what you use for welding preparation.

If you are cleaning the oils off the metal prior to welding it, or welding prior to paint use acetone.
Welding it self will burn off a good deal of the oils on your steel stock.
Give it time to cool or throw it H20 after you weld and prior to using acetone.
Welding residue you'll want to clean up with a slag brush(wire brush).

acetone is a virtually universal solvent. You can use that with cautioin.
Laquer thinner, which has acetone in it, would work as would MEK.
All have this problem of having a low flash point, all with burn very easily, and all will explode. Gasoline would leave an oily residue, whether you can see it or not,.

Gasoline has a film, acetone does not. Depends on how you want the surface to be.

Acetone,,,,,but word of warning. Do not use it indoors and smoke, if you smoke.
My friend was cleaning with acetone in a work shop with closed doors. He lit a cigarette and kaboom....he was killed and burned to death. Acetone must have venitaltion if used.

Probably acetone but unless you are doing some awfully fancy joining, why bother? Just wipe 'er off and weld 'em up.

What are you cleaning off, then? If it is grease or oil, gasoline is better. Acetone is better for paint & related materials.
1)USE MAXIMUM VENTILATION!
2)MAKE SURE ALL IS 100% DRY & ALL FUMES ARE COMPLETELY GONE! (gasoline fumes are not only explosive, but they are both carcinogenic & toxic seperately from that as well)
;-)

Actually acetone does. But it also evaporates a helluva lot faster so you end up using more and it's expensive stuff.
