You've got two options:

First option (the better one) - get a router (linksys WRT54g or similar), a PCI wireless card (WMP54g). If your laptop doesn't have internal wireless, you'll also need a card for it (WPC54G). Set it all up according to the manufactures directions, and you'll be able to set up a small home network where you can see both your laptop and your desktop.

Second option - Skip the router, buy a WMP54g or similar for your desktop, and the card if you need it for your laptop. Enable Internet Connection Sharing on your Desktop, and set up your computers as an Ad-Hoc Network.

Read the below source from Microsoft for help with option # 2.

EDIT

Option # 1 wouldn't necessarily need the WMP54g if you were to use a cable to connect the Desktop and the Router.

You cant wifi information superhighway with out information superhighway. you are able to set up a wifi router with out an information superhighway connect however the only element you've gotten the means to do to that's if the different desktops are linked to it and function a document which would be shared. A instant router (wifi) in simple terms distributes your information superhighway connection in radio waves. So no information superhighway connection means no longer information superhighway wifi
