Ethanol subsidies are not that big compared to the other farm subsidies out there.

But subsidies are used to encourage certain behavoirs. If we want to encourage the production of ethanol as an oil alternative, we put subsidies on its production. Basic economics.

Because of the research it takes. Even if they get a workable solution it will take 15 years before it is cheap enough for the public. It costs over $100 a barrel currently.
