Sure but not in every place or for every species, it is best to check with your local Law enforcement or Fish and Game Department for the precise regulations in your area. Here in Wisconin the 5.56 mm (.223) cartridge is illegal for deer, but ok, for small game..... have youe seen what a high velocity round like that does to a squirrel or rabbit? not pretty... or reccomended. Stick to a .22 Long Rifle for small game, and .243 at a minimum for deer size game. .30-30 or larger even better.
Good hunting

In most (if not all) states you cannot hunt game with a 5.56mm round the minimum is 7mm. That is only for big game. For smaller game like coyote, cougar and such it is legal and might I add very fun. People these days are so misinformed about firearms it's no wonder there is so many blaming guns guns for everything. When people hear that you want to hunt with an M-16 they think that you are going to spray hundreds of bullets recklessly at anything that moves. People need to understand what they are talking about before jumping to conclusions.

The M16 has a very high muzzel volocity and a very long kill range - this high volocity causes a lot of tissue damage (which isn't beneficial if you're game hunting and want to save the maximum amount of meat) and both the volocity and range make it a rather dangerous weapon when there are other hunters in the area.
I'd stick to a more conventional hunting rifle.

In Michigan you have to use a firearm that is .30 caliber (7.62mm) and over. An M-16/AR-15 is usually only a .223 caliber (5.56mm). Some AR's are .308 so that would be okay. Also your magazine can only hold 5 rounds at a time. Oh also only semi-auto is allowed, not full.

Not in Canada, in the states I hear you can hunt with a handgun, so why not a M16?

There are safe, responsible answers to your question. This is not one of those.
What you want is an AR-15. It's the civilian version of the M-16. Several manufacturers make their own variant, and there are plenty of options to choose from.

I don't know. I know the M16 is made for killing people not animals.
