I get so many mailed requests for donations I wonder if all are real charities.

Go to www.charitywatch.org. You can order their very useful catalog in which they give all charities grades from A to F. I get many solicitations from charities too, and I use their catalog to decide whether or not to give. The American Institute of Philantrhopy puts out the booklet. It's excellent. Good luck.

The best way us to check with your state, most states require the charities to register with them in order to obtain an tax exempt status. Also, charities have to register with the IRS as well, but I would check with the state tax office before going to the IRS.
