I wanted to boot another OS from my external hard drive but I am unable to do that since my bios doesn't support booting from usb. So is it possible to boot off a cd, and somehow automatically
mount the USB drive as my boot drive, and then boot?

It is possible to boot from a CD. There are several OS you can get that run from a CD so if your goal is to have another OS to play with there are lots of things you can do. There are several versions of Linux that boot from a CD for instance.

That will not help you boot to USB however. The BIOS sets up the drives and picks the boot order. It loads first. BIOS = Basic Input Output System and basic means that it is hard coded on the chips and loads first. The only thing you can really do about it is get a new motherboard that does support it.

You might be able to do that using a Linux boot disc but I'm hardly the Linux gooru. The link below mentions booting with a USB drive.

Linux OS has many distributions which you can download and burn to CD/DVD as 'live' CD/DVDs. Live CDs and DVDs can boot from CD or DVD drive when the bios is start so that drive boots before your HD. I am currently running Ubuntu Linux which I have on my notebook PC. It dual boots with WinXP.

Other distributions that come to mind, Mepis and Knoppix. Yahoo/Google search "linux live cd" will give you a bunch.

If the system doesn't support USB booting...I would say very high chance of no...BUT there may be a BIOS update for you, check your computers or motherboards manufactures web site for information on a possible update.
