If you are referring to baseball, it is the team with the best record in each league (American and National) that does not win its division. For instance if the playoffs started today (Wed 9/20) in the National League the division winners would be NY Mets, San Diego & St Louis and the Wild Card would be the Dodgers as they have the best record of all remaining teams. In the American League it would be Yankees, Detroit and Oakland with Minnesota as the wild card.
In football it is the same except there are two wild cards for each Conference. Each Conference would have four division winners and two wild cards. The wild cards are determined the same way as in baseball.

You have 3 division winners and 1 wild card team per league .
The wild card winner is the best non-division leading team in both leagues.

You have three divisions in each league. Four teams go to the playoffs. The three leaders of each division get a playoff spot at the end of the season. Out of all of the other teams that don't lead the division, the wild card spot goes to the team with the best record.

the w.c is the second best place into each division , each division has a lot of teams , but only two of them will pass to play-offs, the rest , will wait till the next year to try pass to p.offs
