you can always try to finish that before time,
deadline can measure whether the task is impossible or possible to finish, and professionally, it can "guaranty" to give a result

Always make your deadlines.

If you want more work, meet the deadline.

If it was a stupid, busy-work assignment, still meet the deadline, but look for another job.

If it is doing someone elses job, meet the deadline, with a goal of putting that other person out of work.

Avoid being tagged as someone that does not meet their deadlines. People that care about that kind of stuff will find someone else that can meet their deadlines.

Depends on how important the person setting the deadline is and what are the consequences!

Eg:

Teacher.... late homework =F
Boss .... late report/activity = fired/no raise
IRS .... late filing tax returns = penalties/fines/jail
spouse ... late task = bitching/no sex/fights
