Great question however, I've never met a Republican who was NOT a creationist. Yet I've found democrats and other liberal people tend to come from all sorts of belief systems including creationism. In most circles it appears that you can't be a Republican unless you believe fantastic stories about talking snakes, people being made from ribs and dust bunnies, etc. It's easy to understand how W. is an adamant Creationist and a Republican. His actions have proven time and time again that his mind censors out even the most elementary logic. Conclusions and concepts that are based on anything logical appear far to advanced for his tiny and fragile brain and confuse him easily. Believing in speculative, unverified answers and/or fairy tales that include phrases like "the serpent told me to eat of the apple!" or "Iraq has WMDs!". He seems only able to accept conclusions/concepts that do not involve the annoyance of having to actually think and the irritation of that pesky logic stuff, both of which, do nothing but make his head hurt.

The creationists probably embarrass some republicans, but only those who are not creationists. And since some large number of republicans (and even some democrats) are creationists, they're not all embarrassed.

Well, that’s an interesting question. But, as I’ve mentioned before, I think you start with too sweeping of terms. “Republicans” are a large and diverse groups, containing people as varied as secular industrialists, and religions creationists. (and, obviously, the creationists, who are mostly Republican, are not embarrassed of themselves!)
Answering your question as if you mean “Republicans on average,” I’d say that embarrassment is spotty, but beyond that I really don’t know.
For myself, and I am loosely Republican, I’m often pained by “creationists,” but not perhaps for the reasons you’d expect. The creationists are given to making fools of themselves--often on national media. But, being fair, I’d say that both sides in the “creation v. evolution” debate have a marked tendency to miss the point entirely, and say very absurd things. Creationists are often more laughable, but that is partly the result of good PR on the part of the scientific establishment.
What really bothers me about the creationist is the bad light they shed on any other, more credible, doubters of Darwinian evolution… and on religion folks generally (both groups I consider myself part of).
“Creationism” tends to be a dogmatic, rather than a scientific, position. Yet it’s practitioners, often knowing essentially nothing about science, act as if their beliefs should be treated as science. Certainly, they are allowed to hold such beliefs, but they show themselves to be fools when they try to use religion as objective science, or flaunt there lack of real education while all the while acting imperious and intellectually superior.
But ignorant Bible thumpers are not the only doubters of the Darwinian synthesis. There is a (in my opinion) much more credible school, pioneered by academics and natural scientists (real ones, not the trumped up kind of “scientists” that creationist often produce) called “Intelligent design.”
The “Intelligent design” position isn’t inherently religious. Instead, it is a school that claims, based on the data and theory of mainstream science itself, Evolution is an unsatisfactory theory; and that some sort of guiding intellect is the best explanation we have for the origin of species.
Sorry if this sounds like an apologetic for Intelligent Design--I know that isn’t what you asked for. But, since I consider myself part of that school of thought, you can see why absurd folk like the creationists would be an embarrassment. The media causes part of my consternation, as they lump any doubter of Darwinian evolution into one group; Creationists make this even worse by sometimes co-opting the title of their more respectable second cousins; and the scientific establishment often finishes by deriding anyone who doesn’t accept the current paradigm.
Anyhow, that is why creationists are something of an embarrassment to me. Still, one only has control over the actions of one idiot--one's self. So I try to be sensible, and remember that I’m not responsible for their stupidity (even if brings stereotypes down on my head). Shoot, for all I know, the things I just said might set me up for as much ridicule as the things I denounced.
P.S. I notice that somebody who answered before me refers you to http://www.answersingenesis.org/ (and then proceeds to give an unsolicited sermon). That site, and specifically its flagship founder Ken Ham, are ideal examples of scientifically ignorant Creationists.

They don't embarrass conservatives because conservatives are devout anti-intellectuals. They hate fancy-pants science, probably because they feel stupid listening to scientists.
Plus, if they chose to believe in Reason and Science, they'd have to give up all their hatreds. They couldn't hate women, other races, homosexuals, other religions, every country but the USA, the environment, the poor, etc etc etc.
The conservatives will proudly hold on to their hateful conformism, no matter how much Reason disproves their claims.
Intelligent design is a smokescreen. The argument boils down to this "I cannot believe God didn't create the universe, therefore he must have". Its called "Reason by means of Incredulity" and is a logical fallacy.

Science should accept debate and skeptics... ONLY if the debate and skeptics are using logic and science themselves. Creationists are trying to take fairy tales and turn them into logical fact. Bible stories from the book of Genesis are NOT science. There is little logic to them. They are as scientific as the notion that a Eastern religion has which states the universe is mearly the dream of a sleeping cat.
Now seriously... that is as scientific as saying some omnipotent being created the universe out of nothing in seven days.... its the same concept.... and neither concept belongs in a science classroom.

I believe in both but it depends on WHICH book you are looking at. Most Christians look to the "testements" not the book of Genisis. There are some truths in all of it. Though none of them explain why we are finding remains from "evolving" humans.
