Hi, I have an HP laptop. It recognizes DVDs, does NOT recognize MOST CD's. (It's the same piece of hardware) . Can someone offer any help? I could even use help how to "google" this problem. what exactly to put in the search . Thank You.

No. I put the question out here because it is an "Answers" site. If you dont know, thats ok. But please dont solicit some crappy pay service.

Unistall the drive in the device manager, and then reboot the computer. That will reinstall the drivers.
