Mia takes off for Brazil's goal and, while dribbling the ball, is able to run at a speed of 6.8 yds. per second. Sissi takes off at the same time as Hamm and runs at 8.4 yds per second. (She is able to run faster because she is not dribbling the ball.) Hamm has decided to shoot at the exact moment that Sissi catches up to her, because at that point it will still be difficult for Sissi to block the shot when she is side by side with Hamm. How far away from the goal will Hamm be when she shoots?

Okay. The players need to reach the same point. So Mia is going to run a distance of x and Sissi is going to run a distance of x+10. Distance is equal to speed multiplied by time. Time can be represented for now by y, which we can work out of the equation by solving for y in terms of x. So, for Mia, 6.8y=x and for Sissi, 8.4y=x+10. y is equal to x/6.8, and y is also equal to (x+10)/8.4 by solving the previous equations for y. Now we can set these two equations equal to each other. x/6.8=(x+10)/8.4
I would multiply both side by 8.4 to clear the fractions. So now, 1.24x=x+10
subtract x from both sides
.24x=10
x equals about 41.67 yards.

Now keep in mind we solved for how far the players travled from their starting points, so subtract from 60 and Mia is about 18.33 yards from the goals.
