It really depends. If you are just doing it as part of P.E., it is fine. If you were on the track team, it is not the fastest time for a guy, but it is okay. That was about what I was running as a high school freshman but took it down to 5:45 by my senior year and ran a 5:15 1500 meter in college. I had to work on getting it that fast those because I ran the mile and two mile in track.
If you want to run the mile faster, you will work at it and you will get faster, no matter what your age is now. How fast you can get though, depends upon your God given talent too,

Hey, 7:09 is a decent time for any runner. Come on, comparing Grade 9 to college age is ridiculous. If you are an elite athlete maybe it's high as the high school record is in the 4 minute 30 range.

I remember when I was in 9th grade, we were given 12 minutes to complete 1 mile. Some of the kids completed it in 5 or 6 minutes but some it took alot longer than 12 minutes. It depends on the condition of your body. However if you are doing in in 7:09 your doing a great job! Keep it up!

It would be nothing to write home about.

You'd pass gym class, but the track coach wouldn't be beating down your door either.

9th graders who run track probably do a 5:30 to be considered promising runners. Clearly, there are freshmen who can do much faster (i know people who were already sub 4:20 at that age), but many decent runners start out that slow or worse as freshmen.

EDIT: Just saw someone claim the high school record was in the 4:30 range. That is just plain wrong. It's somewhere around 3:55. The last high schooler to go under 4 was Alan Webb in 2000 (i may be off on the year).

My husband was on the varsity track team in high school and in the ninth grade his time was 4:51, and he was the top runner for the track team. And there is no mandatory physical education in college. So yes your time is a decent time for the 1 mile.

well it depends on what youre running for...are you running because you want to live up to your dad, or because you love to run? your dad should encourage you and not put you down for it...like he said, that was COLLEGE.....what was his time in high school? as for your time, it depends on how long you have been training...if you just went out to the track the other day fo the first time and ran a mile, then youre probably not gonna do that good, but the more you train, the better and faster and more stamina you get...you just have to practice and excercise if you want to run a better mile

No that is not bad. If you have never ran before. After time you can get better. One way to do this, I have found. Is to sprint at some time on the track, then slow down to your reg pase, then sprint again in that same spot again. Repet these steps and you will get faster..
