As everyone has said, boats. Although all kinds were used from large to small, the race to create gigantic ships, like the Titanic, was in part a race to capture the lion's share of the lucrative trans-Atlantic immigrant trade, which was the largest at that time. In fact, the peak year for admission of new legal immigrants to the United States was 1907, when almost 1.3 million immigrants entered and added more than 3 percent to the U.S. labor force. ( http://darwin.nap.edu/nap-cgi/skimit.cgi?recid=5779&chap=20-75 ) Over 70% of these immigrants entered through New York via the "Atlantic Ferry" as steerage passengers on one of the large ocean liners. It was the fact that the more steerage a ship could hold, the more "luxurious" the first class areas could be that led to the sad statistic on the Titanic that a larger proportion of steerage women and children died than first class male passengers. ( http://www.britannica.com/titanic/atlanticferry.html ) If you want to get a sense of steerage on the "average" liner, try this site:

this collection of old nautical prints show life aboard the Atlantic Ferry. I hope this helps.

The only kind of transportation they had then between Eurasia and the US was by ship. The main US port of entry was Ellis Island.
