There's no way you can "ensure" it. You can do EVERYTHING right, and still have a child that's developmentally delayed, or heck, even normal. But smart? It could be partially genetic, but there's not too much you can do about it (if you are pregnant now.)

Once the baby is born, read to her. A lot. That is huge. And not too much tv. Those are the biggies. Play with her. Talk to her. Explain to her what you are doing, etc.

If you carry your baby in a sling all the time, they will be able to observe the world around them better than if they are in a stroller or bouncy seat.

They will watch the way you go about your day, and interact with others. They will learn social skills by watching you and other people, and language skills by seeing you conduct conversations.

Talk to your baby, play with your baby, and keep the tv turned off.

Stay away from most of the questions asked on Yahoo Answers. They are a brain drain that could be passed along from generation ot generation.

As far as what you can do during pregnancy just stay healthy and avoid alcohol and caffeine. The real effort is after the kid is born not now.

Try classical music and reading to your baby and sing the ABC song and things like that. Research shows that environment counts even when in the womb.
