Are there any music journalists out there who want to take a stab at this? Even if you aren't I'd still like to hear from you.

If we're talking *influence*, just know these names:

James Jamerson
Paul McCartney
Chris Squire
John Entwistle

*Would've added Geddy Lee, but he was def' influenced by McCartney & Squire. & I didn't count more recent rock names. Most were influenced by one of the above....

Heres the top 10 most influential bassits in rock history:
Paul McCartney (Beatles, Wings)
Jaco Pastorious (Joni Mitchell, Weather Report)
Stanley Clarke (Return To Forever- not really rock but fusion)
John Entwhistle (You really should check out concert footage from their movie. Amazing! I had no idea.)
Chris Squire (Yes)
Billy Sheehan
Jack Bruce (Cream)
Duck Dunn (Booker T & The MGs)
Larry Graham (Sly & Family Stone, Graham Central Station)
Victor Wooten (Flecktones - not really rock)

The non rock bassists (Clarke, Wooten, & Pastorious) may not be rock bassists but they were influential on rock bassists so they rate . Thjeir influence is part of rock history.

Thank you...someone who knows John Entwistle (of The Who) was the man. Not a big Sting fan but he was pretty influential as well.

in my opinion, Jaco Pastorius is at the top of the list. he took bass from being in the background to the front. some honorable mentions go to Cliff Burton (Metallica), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Geddy Lee (Rush) because they're pretty awesome.

How come no one is saying Cliff Burton. His Bass solos were beyond brilliant. All you have to do is listen to any one of his solo's and you will agree. His Bass intro on "For Whom the Bells Toll" or the intro to "Damage Inc." or his bass leads on "Orion".
