Sure since mostly everyone here will come recommend you a crappy program.

First an antivirus, you can install AVG AntiVirus and click the big Scan Now button. Or you can do an online scan where you dont need to install anything. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and click scan now. it will ask you to install Active X (not a program) click yes or ok. It will scan and tell you if there is a virus.

For spyware, go to www.download.com and search AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Install those. For adaware click the globe icon after you install it on the top right to update it then click finish and start. For spybot click updates on the left, let it update, click scan now, check for problems. Let it scan then delete them.

I hope I could help you! Good luck & Safe Searching.

You were not specific in your question.

What kind of scan are you talking about?

I agree with using SpyBot for Spyware but let us assume you do not have an anti virus programme.

Go to Avast Home Edition (Free) and download it. You will be e-mailed a registration code which you should keep and you must register within 60 days. It's really simple

Now for the fun part. Avast will ask you if you want to run a system scan when you reboot. Say YES and reboot. Let Avast do it's magic and get rid of viruses, Trojans, spy-ware etc.
It will update regularly and you should run a virus scan periodically after all this

If you already have a good anti virus programme on your computer, simply run a scan. Can take a while.

Another Free programme I would highly recommend is CCleaner. This programme will clean up all the junk on your computer keeping it running smoothly.

last suggestion defragment your disk weekly to keep it running faster also.

Depends on what you're scanning. For spyware and adware I'd recommend Spybot Search and Destroy. For viruses I'd recommend Nortons.

Norton's oviously isn't free but spybot is.
