I start off the week with a $20 in my purse. Not a dime more. That's for the small stuff. Everything else gets put on the card. I take the receipts home every night and balance the checkbook. It's quicker, more accurate, less cluttered, and just plain easier that way. Then I rip up the receipts and throw them away.

No, it helps to keep receipts. You can record your income and how much you spend for household needs, entertainment, clothes, medications, beauty products etc. This way you can figure out your monthly expenses and balance that cheque book. Also, if you purchase something and have to return it you have your receipt. It also helps if something is tax deductable.

If you have a reason to save receipts by all means save them.
Use them for budgetting your household, knowing how much you spend in each area, i.e. heating oil, hydro, groceries, gasoline, recreation... .

Maybe you just need to keep them for a month or two to help balance your bank balance book. It's a totally individual act. I save mine so I know on average what we spend on what during the month.

If it's a receipt that you can use to write off unreimbursed expenses on your taxes like work clothes, office supplies (or anything else work-related), paid medical bills, prescription drugs, eye-glasses... keep it. If it's for stuff you can't write off, throw it out. It's not necessary to keep.
