Ok, seriously it may sound like a really dumb idea, but YES. Open up a dictionary. Find words you think are interesting. Write them down. Learn them. Also, reading various books can build vocabulary as well.

The most effective means of enhancing one's vocabulary would be to read as many books as possible. While reading the dictionary will certainly expose you to a lot of words, books demonstrate context. I think context is a much easier way to learn.
In addition, I used to have a word-a-day calendar. At the end of every week I would write a sentence using all the new words - and the same every month. It was a very interesting way to learn new words.

The best way to enhance your vocabulary is to have a supportive family structure, in which words are both tools as well as weapons. You learn the nuances of the language; the connotations, denotations, the proper (and improper) use of of language.
Short of coming from that kind rearing; become immersed with people who have a very strong command of the language. You'll pick it up no time at all:)
Don't try to learn all the words in the English language, as there are over a million......the most anyone is going to use in their lifetime is about 20,000-40,000 . Your joe-average person will most likely use about10, 000 words.

In my experience, it seems to be that the people who do a lot of reading are those who seem to have an above average vocabulary. Whenever you find a word you're unsure of, look it up in the dictionary--or even use contextual clues within the sentence to try to guess the meaning of the word on your own.
Good luck to you!

Read as many books of different types as you can get your hands on. The more you read, the more words you encounter, so the better your vocab gets.

Didn't we learn these tactics in our SAT prep courses?
Everyone's saying to read a lot. That'll help you build up your base. Then try to use them in everyday situations. That'll help with retention.
Good luck.
