People just think they can go to a doctor, get a pill, and all of their problems will go away. If the doctor can't "fix" them, they must be a bad doctor. They don't want to pay some guy $100 to tell them to go home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Why do people go to the doctor for cold and flu symptoms anyway? There are enough over the counter drugs to relieve symptoms where you don't need a doctor bill on top of it.

I'm with you completely. My neighbour, as soon as I say one of the kids has a cold insists on asking why I haven't taken them to the Doctor to get antibiotics. I snapped at her last time. There have been ads on TV and the radio stressing that colds are a virus and can't be treated with antibiotics. I asked my Doctor what her take on it was. She thinks that some Doctors don't get enough patients and will prescribe anything just to keep a patient. Trouble is we build up a resistance to antibiotics, so one day, when they are really needed, they may not work if taken too often.

Because doctors have contracts with the drug companies so they prescribe unnecessary medication (ie: Money).
Because most people don't know antibiotics do nothing for the cold and flu.

It's a control issue. Have you noticed? Humankind wants to feel like we're in control of our environment and our lives. It scares folks when they think there isn't anything that can be done, but a condition will simply have to get better with time and rest and fluids, etc. If there is something over which humans have no control (certain illnesses, natural disasters, etc) we tend to try to affix blame or find some other way to feel like we really are in control of things. Truth is -- scary though it be -- there are many things we humans cannot control or even fully understand.

I guess some people feel that they won't get better unless they have some pill they can pop to make them better...I agree that certain ailments do call for medication.. but I strongly feel that as a society we have relied on medications far too much and we go to that first, instead of seeking alternatives that may actually improve our condition...docotrs are just as guilty..they are all too quick to write the script before they even know all of the sypmtoms!!! TOO SAD!!

If a bacterial infection triggered the cold perhaps it at least gets rid of the infection. Your pic looks like Jackie Onassis, nice.

well, sadly there are many people who are not as smart as you and I, and sadder still is that there are doctors on that list.
