My son wants to try out for his select chorus at his school. His chorus teacher said that they can sing any song (except rap) to try out. I suggested the national anthem but I'm looking if theres a better song? I think its good to sing the national anthem also because its known and he already knows the lyrics. Is the national anthem good? Thanks.

I'm a music teacher and I have taught chorus at all levels - elementary, middle and high school. At an audition, I'm listening for the quality of the student's voice, how well they can sing on pitch and how clear their diction is (the words they are singing). I would love to hear a young man sing the national anthem, but it can be a very difficult song to sing. If he's not comfortable singing it, America (My country 'tis of thee) or America the Beautiful would also be good choices. But if he can sing the national anthem and he's comfortable singing it for the audition, I wouldn't disuade him!!! Best of luck!

The national anthem is a hard song to master, try "America the Beautiful "

It's not a very original song as a demonstration of talent. some of the other students may use it too. Your son should sing something a little off-beat to showcase his talent and stand apart from the rest of the group. How about a show tune or a golden oldie? If you know of or have met the chorus teacher how about something from his/her generation? Good luck to your son and congratulations to you. I hope your son aces the audition!

I would advise against The Star Spangled Banner, just because of the range of notes. It may be difficult for him. Something with a generally more condensed range would probably be better for him - one example is God Bless America, or This Land Was Made For You And Me.

Try a song that he's passionate singing. A song he really likes, or something that means something to him.

Just be sure he can hit ALL the notes. That is one hard song to sing.

if he messes up every body will know. Try to find a song that is cool between you two, but not many people know it
