Be consistant with the time you put him down. Also make sure he is old enough to even be on a schedule.

Usually a baby will get his/herself into a sleep pattern without you doing anything. For the first month or so they sleep so often and there isn't a routine. The best thing is to put them down at the same time every day. Most babies, once they sleep through the night, will take a nap in the morning and one in the afternoon. If you put them in their cribs at these time, often they will fall asleep naturally. Each child is different though, and it depends on their age

Make sure the baby is on the most regular of schedules first. Same bedtime and wake up time. In order to do this, the baby must know night from day and sometimes must be woken in the morning, subtly, to get on schedule. Next, go with the same naptime daily. Noon is best. Eventually, the baby will be right on schedule.

Do the same routine everytime he's going to sleep or nap.
For example you can change his diapers, wash his face and put him on his crib/bed and say "it's nap time."
After a while, the baby would pick it up and understand that it's sleeping time.

I trained my son that way. I put him on the sofa, and turn off the TV during the day. He'd fall asleep after his noon feeding.

Be sure to put him to bed every night at around the same time, wake up at the same time and put him to naps at the same time. Also feedings need to be regular. Constancy is key!!

just try to keep your life as ordered as possible. babies sleep when they are tired. eventually your baby will probably find their groove. at a young age, my daughter took two one-hour naps a day. after about a year, she went to taking one two-hour nap a day. i just let her fall into her own groove. paid attention to her signals, and let her sleep when she was tired. soon, i noticed that those naps were coming at the same time everyday.

I put her in her crib at the same time every day. (And keep the before nap routine very consistent.)

You don't! At least for the most part. Count your blessings when the baby actually goes down for a nap:)

I began by giving him his bath at the same time every morning then he would have his bottle and straight to bed. Everything fell into place from there on.
