I think that sometimes teens feel like the adults do not really hear what they are saying.

I teach high school and I get along great with my students. But when they tell me things I may make suggestions or tell them that they made a bad choice, etc.

When I talk to my 14 year old son it is a different story. I sometimes have to give consequences and he does not always feel like it is fair. We do not see eye to eye and when we both feel like we are right... it is hard to budge and meet somewhere in the middle sometimes.

Because the adult is trying to protect the teenager. They are trying to pass along some of their own wisdom and teach the teens things that they have already learned the hard way.

The teenagers on the other hand don't feel that the adults have anything relevant to say and that they are too old to know what they are talking about. Besides, the teens already know everything anyway.

Because there's no common ground. So they feel contradicted and, therefore react negatively...

Fin common ground, be agreeable at first, sympathize, and then get to the subject, I guarantee they will listen.
