You have an old car and the ignition switch in the column is worn out OR someone has abused it before you bought the car and its broken OR you have an enemy and that person shot some fiberglas in the key slot. Most likely, the first option, though.

There is a steering wheel lock that you can disengage by pulling on the steering wheel to the left or right and turning the key

Pull your steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key. Sounds like you have pressure on the wheel lock stopping the key from turning.

Spray some lube on the key, and turn the pressure away, from you, by moving the steering wheel, as you try to turn the key. Don't force it, its just that the wheel it at an angle. try it,

It could be any of the above, wiggle the steering wheel, if that dosen't work, then its a little more complicated, it may be the ignition is worn, or it could be you don't have it in park. I know I drove a ranger that tricked me into beliveing it was in park because the needle didn't move all the way over.

the wheel is on a bind,turn the wheel right and left and try turning the key at the same time.

the steering wheel is probably locked, try turing it one way or the
other, you will feel it movejust a small amount, while turning the key. that shoud free it up. also, make sure it is all the way in
park.

Just wiggle the steering wheel from side to side firmly while you turn the key, it will go.

Time for a new key lock. It is war out and putting in your key the lock no longer see it as your key
The tumblers in the lock are warn just eneff so your key Will not turn
If it is a GM it is one of the easyest key lock to replace.
