Do you know that this is an actual condition/phobia and alot of people have it. I am not sure what it is called. I have a fear of getting blood drawn also, I will tell you this by the time I had my son, I wasn't as afraid as I used to be. I think I got stuck more when I was pregnant then any other time. Take someone with you, hold their hand, think pleasant thoughts, and know you are doing it for your baby! Good Luck!

Oh, honey! I was where you are now! I had to have my husband come in and hold my hand every time blood was drawn. I would tense up and freeze and they couldn't find my veins because I was so scared. The first baby was tough for me because of this.
By my second baby, though, I developed gestational diabetes and I had to go for regular blood tests. I just got used to it after that.
Nobody likes to have blood drawn. It doesn't make you a horrible mom for not wanting the tests. Have someone you love go with you and support you. It's easier that way. Think of something else while they're drawing the blood...think of holding your new baby, think of going on a nice cruise somewhere, think of a really pleasant happy memory, and hold your loved one's hand during this. Most phlebotomists are really understanding about needle phobias.
Just think about your new baby and how you're helping him or her and you will get by just fine. By the time you get to the hospital to have your little bundle of joy, and they need to put in the IV, you'll be so excited you won't even notice.
Good luck and congratulations!

Ask your doctor toexplain to you the results of not getting your blood tests done. That should scare you more. Make your resolve to get it done without haste. From this point on in your life many decisions will be difficult and scary to make sometimes. In life, we have to make the best decision possible with the information we have available to us at the time. That is the best we can do so when you are facing something you are afraid of then is when to be brave. Focus on what the outcome could be if you don't. Your a mama now, be fierce. Do whatever has to be done. That's what mamas do. Despite our fears.

Well, if you have gestational diabetes it can often be controlled by diet and exercise...I'd suggest that even if this next test comes back okay, you should watch your carb intake. I don't mean cut out all carbs either...just eat whole wheat breads, and carbs from natural sugars (fruits and veggies). Don't drink regular sodas (if you do now)...I had gestational diabetes that went undiagnosed and untreated (I didn't know about the carb stuff then), and I had polyhydramniosis (too much amniotic fluid), my son was 10.1 lbs (delivered by c-section), he had low blood sugar which is common is bigger babies and didn't really affect him as they treated it immediately, but he had to be hospitalized for a couple of days w/ Jaundice which is another side effect of gestational diabetes...he is perfectly healthy now (4 years later). Don't worry too much, if you do have it just watch what you eat...and the good thing is that meats have no carbs but are high in iron...I hope everything works out for you! Best of luck!!!

Rest assured there's a reason for all the tests, and that is to give you the healthiest baby possible. Try to relax using deep breaths or visualization before they draw your blood. Your baby will be much better off in the long run for a small amount of discomfort. Also, when you go, tell them you are afraid, they can help you.

Yeah, needles can be a scary thing. And when we get it on our minds and dread it anything can seem even worse than it is. Try and relax and remember that you are doing this to keep yourself and your child healthy. Maybe try while they are doing the test focus on something else in the room and do not watch. Hope this helps and good luck.

I don't think you can get over the phobia really.. but tell them you want to lay down while they draw your blood... bring something to distract yourself like an MP3 player or something. You can also just talk to the person drawing your blood and ramble about stupid crap to help keep your mind off of it... they are used to people just rambling.

realize taht it is for your child good. I have small tiny veins and it's nearly impossible to draw blood so i hate getting it drawn. I just have to face it and know that it is for the good of my child.
