Life is full of ups and downs, maybe the best friend has been experiencing some turbulence during the years when she hasn't seen your friend. Matter-of-fact the best friend may have experience some rudeness from some stranger just before meeting your friend and was off tilt. Your friend should take the time to find out what the situations are that her best friend has been or is going through. Likely you'll find out soon as she does.

It means that while she held her best friend in high esteem and affection her friend didn't feel the same way and really wasn't a good friend. People can change over the years and become distant. I invited a woman over to my home that was a good friend to my mother n law many years ago while they were both in Germany. Since that time my mother n law has lost weight and gotten physically fit and doesn't look or act her age at all. The so called friend put on weight, got divorced and was a very bitter woman. We haven't heard from her since. It was very sad because my mothernlaw still held the same regard for her on that day as she did many years ago.
Just tell your friend to cross her off of her XMAS card List.

"Lukewarm" would be the hug that doesn't feel genuine, the smiles that seem forced, and getting the feeling of the person not really being happy to see you.
