They are quite annoying on the lawn and hurt to step on. We love the tree but it is TOO good at producing!

Oh we have TONS of squirrels...which leads to holes all over the lawn and sprouting oaks lol! They actually leave the acorns, and eat the pecans growing at other houses. Our neighborhood is full of old oaks so I guess we're not alone...I was just hoping against hope haha!

You might try a hormone spray, although I don't know if it works on oaks.

Some people spray some type of plant hormone into certain trees when the trees are flowering, in order to inhibit fruit production. For example, in my townhouse complex we have lots of olive trees. When the olives are mature, which is about now, they drop and leave dark, oily stains all over the pavement. In the spring or summer (I forgot when the trees flower), the landscapers spray the trees with a fruit inhibitor, but the trees are so prolific that it doesn't always make a big difference.

Some folks also do this to sweetgum (liquidambar) trees -- those are the trees with maple-like leaves that drop round, spiky seedpods that look like medieval maces. No one wants those because they hurt if you step on them, and they clog up lawnmowers! LOL

Again, I don't know if a spray like this would work on an oak. Also, since oaks are so huge and sprawling, I don't know how you'd even get HIGH enough in the canopy to spray thoroughly. You'd probably have to hire a tree crew, which in turn would probably cost more money than you wish to spend.

I guess you can just hope that a large family of SQUIRRELS will invade your garden, because they really love acorns! *grin* So do acorn woodpeckers, but they're only in certain areas of the country. Whatever you do, please don't cut down your oak. They are beautiful, amazing trees. Also, in most cities, it is illegal to cut down oaks whose trunks are larger than a certain circumference (basically all old oak trees). You can't even get a permit unless the oak is disease or rotting, otherwise you'll have to pay a fine, which sometimes is quite hefty.

We have the same problem and I have ask the same question, we have thousands of the large acorns and they do hurt to step on them even with shoes on and they have made our yard very uneven. Beautiful tree with lots of shade just hate the acorns. On the other hand we are the most popular house in the neighborhood with the squirrels.

No but I can suggest maybe getting some chipmunks to gather the acorns. They are such beautiful trees. Best of luck
