I'm going to take gymnastics, because I'm going to try out for cheerleading next year. Do I need to take Dance too? If I do, then what kind of dancing? I'm a shy, so I'm going to work on that (Even it means I need counseling). & if you have any other advice on cheerleading please tell me! & please don't say anything discouraging like "you can't cheerlead if you're shy, you have to be outgoing". Please don't say anything like! Thanks

Yes, the more poised that you can be, the better.

Gymnastics is a great starter, but I am so glad that you are considering dance too. It will not only help you with your routines, it will give you the basic of memorizing steps in cheerleading.

I have been coaching for many years, and have seen lots of girls try out that could nail a back handspring, yet fall short on their routine for lack of dance background.

i feel that the dance background will be much more beneficial to you in the long run.

Work hard and have lots of fun! Cheering is a great sport!

there are plenty of cheer camps now like the other person said google cheerleading in you area and you will find a list. hip hop is a good class to take and you want to take cheernastics most gymnastic centers offer this it is geared to the way cheerleaders do gymnastics and yes it is different. they are not as picky with posture like a gymnastics coach would be I coach both. and being shy well you will get over that plus you'r not out there by yourself it is a team sport you will be fine just have fun learning and it will come to you anyone can cheer they just need to want it and practice:)

Gymnastics is definitely important, and I would say that taking funk or jazz dance would also be helpful. Dance classes will help you when you have to learn cheers quickly, will make you more aware of how your body moves, and you will probably meet lots of other girls who will also be trying out, so you can all practice together.
