We have an injured goat with what we think is one broken back leg. They are cut up. He's lost some blood. He seems like he's going into shock. What can we give him to help him get through this until tomorrow. Also, how long can a goat lay on it's side? We don't want to make his breathing difficult. He's also got cuts on his neck.We cleaned the wounds and, put a clotting agent on his neck and legs. Please serious answers only.

You have to set the leg. You may be able to look that up online to see how.

Give him Probios. When they get stressed you need to get certain agents in them. Penicillen is a must. Pen is one of those things you can't overdose a goat on. They just excrete out what they don't use. A B12 shot would help him get a hunger going, but if you have fortified B vitamin shots give him one.

Laying down too long isn't good, but he should be fine through the night. Just rotate him. How deep are the cuts? I'm sure you know to get all the bleeding stopped.

If you have no shots or anything like that, get him water. He needs to drink. Hydration is important. The Probios would have come in handy because you can mix them in water.

It would help to know what supplies you have. Read directions on what you have and see what is for stress related. That will help. Give it to him, but give him one thing at a time. If he hasn't had a tetanus (if you have this) give him tetanus antitoxin. It's for brief exposures of tetanus. Not for the long run.

Was he attacked by a dog? Or something? Or was he caught in a fence? There isn't too much that can be done until morning. Try and make him comfy. Lots of straw, and if you can stay out there with him. As long as you got the blood to stop, you are on your way. Give him a big shot of Pen., any stress related products (probios), and make sure he is hydrated. That is most important (after the blood stopping).

Hope he makes it

Keep the goat still and warm. (Wrap him in blankets and put hot water bottles around him to help stave off shock.) Let him lay or sit in whatever position is most comfortable for him. With a loss of blood there is also the possibility that his blood sugar level will drop. Open his mouth and rub some Karo syrup on his gums to help boost his sugar levels.

Best of luck. And thank you for making the effort to help this guy!

while i don't personally have goats, i do live on a farm with cattle and horses. my recommendation is giving him some penicillin to keep down the pain, and if there is swelling. i'm not sure about how long a goat can stay on his side, but i would think he might be ok untill the morning, although with him being in shock, you never know...hope that helps some!

Why do you have to wait until tomorrow? Call your vet immediately. They have emergency numbers for situations like this.
