Art can be many things. My art is an expression, an observation, it's my view on the world and what's going on in my life, and a lot of times, the world as I wish it to be. Although most of what I express is very positive, sometimes I just want to release some of the ugliness that gets pushed to the back of my mind. So, yes, art can be ugly. Maybe what the artist is trying to convey isn't pretty.

If it isn't pretty then it must be ugly. Sometimes some of the things they call art isn't art. Some of it is just plain butt ugly. Of course they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and sometimes the beholder may need glasses.

Ugly doesn't mean it's either bad or not art. No dictionary definition of art stipulates anything about the quality of the work, only the process of making it and the audience it interacts with.

Art can be ugly or beautiful or shocking. I personally believe art is something that pulls you in and gets a reaction from you weather you like it or not.

No, art cannot be ugly!
UGLY is an opinionated word: so if you see a piece of art and think it's atrocious, someone else might think of it as a masterpiece embedded with a deep, true moral or meaning.
It all about the way you perceive it.

Beauty is in the mind of the beholder. All forms of art are beautiful in the eye of those who like what they see . From painting to sculpting to dancing, all beautiful forms of art. I for one do not like abstract art, i think it is "ugly" to my eye, but to the creator and those who like it it is beautiful. It is just a matter of taste.

I think so - it all comes down the perception of the person who is beholding the art form I guess.

What might be 'ugly' to me, may be a thing of beauty to you and vice versa.

Look at Guernica. http://www.artfaq.it/desktop/guernica.jpg
Picasso didn't paint it because it was pretty. It was about war and he knew war is ugly. Art doesn't have to be about what looks good. It makes a statement.
