University of Phoenix is not recognized in everything they claim they can certify you in, example teaching credentials, not recognized by the state of CA. Depending on your major, there are schools that are accredited and worth paying for. WGU is a good school for business, IT and education--and is recognized by the United States. Colorado Tech has other stuff too and is also accredited. You have to make sure the school youre applying to is accredited or you're really gambling on your time and money.

Not really, its better than nothing but if your looking for a major change this is not good, try your local community college for online classes, generally these will not be self paced but will transfer to any school, harvard, uc davis, umass, ect...
Some schools do offer online classes to do at your own pace, it will be harder to obtain your degree but much more reputable in the end, for example, the uc berekeley extension program offer extremely high quality self-paced online education.

ps- when looking at schools online ask about their accreditation, generally it only has one way of being accreditated and private organization and group are not sufiencient accreditation.

There are no respected on-line degrees.

Lots of people would never think about hiring someone with an on-line degree.
