I am going Friday for a Cesarian. The doc says the baby is between 7 1/2 and 8 lbs.. What weight is normal for a baby that is 3 weeks early? People are driving me nuts with "Dang! He's gonna be big!!!"

BTW He is being born early because he is breech, and I have lost a previous baby due to imbilical chord problems. So, just as a precautionary, my Doc is taking him early. Not too early, I am 37 weeks.

I had my 4th baby at 37 weeks and he was HUGE. He was already 9 lbs 4 oz. I shudder when I think he would have gained a pound or two over the next couple weeks had I delivered him "on time." My other 3 were all 10 days early: 7 lb, 11 oz; 8 lb, 4 oz; 8 lb, 13 oz. Incidentally, the 1st and 3rd babies were girls and they both got stuck in the birth canal but I delivered them without pain meds and vaginally anyway. The 2nd and 4th were boys: 3 and 4 pushes, respectively, with no pain meds (hurt like hell, if you were delivering vaginally, I'd say GO WITH THE MEDS!). I wasn't injured during any of the deliveries either.
I think 7 1/2-8 pounds is a perfect size! That he's going to
be "big" is subjective. He's the size he's supposed to be. Maybe they think that is a compliment to tell a mom that the baby will be big. I really wish people wouldn't scare a mom like that. I was terrified when the ultrasound showed #4 to be as big as 11 pounds! Turns out it was over a pound and a half off.
As my mother always said, "What's normal anyway? Normal for one isn't always normal for another. We're all individuals." Even when we just come out of the womb.
Your doctor knows best about having this baby early.
GOOD LUCK and CONGRATULATIONS on your new little bundle of joy!

If you're 3 weeks early, then at 7 or 8 pounds, that is big for how far along you are. Between 6 and 8 pounds I think is normal weight for a baby at full term. I was on time with my son who was 7 lb 3 oz, then my two girls were overdue and were 10 lb 6 oz and 10 lb 4 oz when I got induced. I had a lot of drugs!!

It might usually be 5 to 6 1/2 pounds at three weeks early, but don't worry, many term newborns are exactly that: 7 1/2 to 8 pounds. Everything will be fine! Good luck!

i had both my boys 3 weeks early and my first was 8lbs9oz and my second was 8lbs1oz so they can still be a good size but i would guess that 7-7 1/2 lbs is the norm 3 weeks early

My daughter was one day late and she was 7 lbs and 3.5 ozs. Honestly he does sound like a big baby for 3 weeks early, but that is good because that means he probably won't be in the hospital very long.

They say the average size of a full term baby is 7-8 lbs thats a nice size baby for being 3 weeks early but I don't think its toooo big. Good luck with your c-section my daughter just had one the beginning of august.

I still had about 4 weeks to go when my doctor said he wouldn't be surprised if he weighed 8 or 9. When he was born two days late he weighed 8lbs 11.6 oz. No matter if he weighs 6 or 8, I'm sure he would have told that's not a good size, but by all means mothers know it is. :) good luck!

That is a little big for a baby that's 3 wks early...but not huge. After 36 weeks the baby is considered full term anyway. Don't listen to what others say, you are going to be a mommy soon and none of it will matter when you are holding your little miracle!!!! Bless you and good luck!!!!

My son was three weeks early and weighed 7 lbs and 11oz and was 20in long. He is now a healthy 7 month old. He is a tall baby, and everyone makes sure to tell me how big he is. He is now 20 lbs and is 30in long. When people say, "wow what a big boy", I just smile and say, "yes he is, and he is just like his dad" who is 6'4. People just want to be able to say "something", they never think it may scare the crap out of you or hurt you. Your baby is just the right size!!! Good luck with the little one!!!!

My doc said that you can't accurately estimate the weight of the baby... Both my babies were over 8 pounds.
My first was 9 lbs 13 oz... Admittedly that was a big recovery and we both got injured.
My second was 8 lbs... I only had to push 3 times with him and he was out within 15 min! (we call him our "tiny" baby...)
I prefer big babies - they sleep good right away.
