There sure are a lot. Depending on your interests, here are some suggestions. You could use the Blue Whale. It is the largest animal that has ever lived on Earth. The giant panda is a widely loved creature, admired for it's "cuteness." The orangutan is a highly intelligent creature that has taught us a lot about the evolution of primates. The California Condor is the largest flying land bird in North America. My last reference contains a more extensive, though still incomplete list.

`The haggis. It's an animal native to Scotland...... Just kidding.

Animals truly beneficial to humanity rarely goes extinct. The only reasons would be destruction of habitat for a 'higher' purpose (say a dam vs the snail darter) or hunting (dodo or passenger pigeon).

I would choose the effect that the Japanese whaling industry has on whales.

Is any one creature really more important than another?? You want to argue for those beneficial to humans? Why take that tack? Everything that exists is interconnected and humanity has no right, divine or otherwise, to choose which survives and which doesn't.

what about polar bears. i think it's very interesting that their habitat is shrinking because global warming is melting their home and they don't have enough time out on the ice to hunt.

lookup US Wildlife and Fisheries. They are responsible for putting things on the "endangered species" list. You can check out the endangered species in your state. That would be cool.

How about us human beings.

Reading and hearing about the state of this rock that we live on. I worry for anyone younger than 45 years old, fuel & power shortages, unprecidented natural disasters, cost of living, it all seems to have gone crazy.
I have 2 young kids and worry big time for them, heck for every one.
Maybe seeing "An Inconveinant Truth" has scared me or opened my eyes.

How about Bats? They are feared by many due to ignorance but so important to our ecology. They pollinate banana trees. and some flowers in Hawaii are now having to hand pollinated by humans because of the disappearance of some species of bats.
