windows does encrypt for free, but only does so on the ntfs file system.

I use truecrypt, which works like a charme. When you do a search on this tool, you see that many security professionals use and recommend it. so I guess it must be quite safe.

You're not going to find a free program that's going to encrypt your files well. However, you can get a free trial at Stompsoft.com and then you can encrypt the files. It'll give you time to save up the few dollars that the software costs when the trial expires.

windows already has a software that does such
right click, properties advanced and somewhere in there is an option to encrypt
