Just tell them that you need more time. Once they realized that they not only hired you but your more educated then they hired that is always a plus for them.

If you are unable to study for the exam and work at the same time, perhaps you will not stand up too well when the work load ramps up, like around tax time or if one of your major clients gets called to court. Modern society affords all kinds of spare time. You probably are talking about a 40 hour a week job. What are you doing with the other 128 hours? If you sleep eight hours a night, that still leaves 112. Prioritize, and learn to study during the small snippets of time you have either at lunch, on break, during the commute, and at home. Turn OFF this computer and the television. You can do so much more than you are used to doing. Make meals quick and off paper plates. Arrange with spouse or family to allow you study time when at home. On weekends, don't go out and party, stay home and study. If there are too many distractions at home, get a hotel room and take your books there.
It is difficult, but many, many accountants work while studying. The firm has been more than generous already, don't press your luck, that would be a bad start to a career.

I'm afraid that a request for time off to study for the CPA examination is something that they see all too often. You can ask, but since you've already seen 1 extension and they have not yet received *ANY* work from you, then expect this to cause some tensions.
My suggestion is that you bite the bullet and start the job. Study for your CPA during the evenings and when you're ready to take it request the week off prior to the exam so that you can clear your head, review, and get your final preparations done. It may take you more time to study for, but ultimately, you'll have real-world experience for it as well!
Good luck on getting your certification!

This job sounds like a real good opportunity for you so it looks like you shouldn't jeorpadise this situation. What will happen if they give you the time you desire and then something else comes up that you're not aware of?? I know many people who work full time and study for their CPA so you may need to do the same. The other option you have is be honest with them and advise your situation. Given the current demand for accountants I am sure you will find a job elsewhere, but it's up to you.

you have 50 per cent chance they will wait for you and 50 per cent they will withdraw their offer of employment. your choice. i think you are smart to finish up your course and then take the exam and then you would be a cpa and make more money......if you decide not to work full time and finish the studying. why not hook up with a temp agency for the time your are studying and tell them you wish to work part time or for only 2 or 3 days. they might be more acceptable with this arrangement...

My cousin took it and passed it, while she was working full-time as a CPA, running a go-mart type place that she owned and driving an hour one way to work. Just start working and suck it up. Life is hard, it's time to dive in head first.

Well maybe you should not ask them and work full time. Because trust me I know how it feels and if you wait a lot of time before working theyll get desperate and fire you. So id say the best thing is to work hard.

Yes, set up a study schedule around your job and stick to it. You are not the only person who has ever had to work and study for an exam.
No partying, no friends, just get down and work.

It depends on which firm hired you and if you can afford not working. If it's your dream firm, you may not ask too much favor for fear of getting fired. If it's not your dream firm, and you can afford not working, go ahead and ask. If they ended up not hiring you, just find another firm when you have passed your exam.
