Under it's own power without any extra amplification, the electric guitar. Hands down. I've played on many rock and roll stages and let me tell you, an electric guitar cranked will take your head off. it will completely drown out bass, drums, vocals-anything you put up against it.

it really depends on what band your talking about.
If its a jazz band it depends on every one, but brass is usually heard.
Drums and guitar seem like the loudest for a rock band,
but normal band (non jazz) seems like the saxophone section is always the loudest.

This may sound crazy, but when I was in a marching band...you could ALWAYS hear a piccolo above everything else. It could be because the sound is so shrill.

in my school band: percussion or sax. percussion because there's like 7 of us and sax because they have no freaking concept of DYNAMICS! I would say drums or guitar in a rock band.
