With $500 per month budget, you can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products or information you provide. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com . Track your ROI carefully and find out which keywords bring in the most traffic and the most conversion.

In addition to spending for advertising, you can also do online marketing strategies that are effective but free. Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

7. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

I will tell you what i have done, i have 2 business's , i made postcards on the internet, for my business and advertised it on the postcard, and then got into a yellowbook or phone book and sent it to everyone in there. I know u think well thats not going to work, but you will be surprised @ how many people do respond to your postcard . Just keep track of everyone you have already sent it to, and do surrounding areas. Then another thing i did , was called alot of business and got their fax number, i made a flyer & faxed it to everyone within a 60 mile radus. i have been self employed , by word of mouth now, at first it was the cards & flyers, and i make a really good living w/my business and its not much expense if you do it ur self. What ever ur selling or can do, if its a good product or u do quality work. Ur advertising by word of mouth by clients will make ur business grow... trust me it works!!!! good luck

That's a pretty good budget to work with.

I'd reccommend trying several methods to see which works best for you.

You can find several methods to do that by exploring the links here:
https://ecommbiz.net

By allotting some money for pay per click (you can even localize the customers), some for underpop ads, some for targeted emails and some for banner ads should give you a pretty good idea of what will work best for your specific site.

You'll find several companies for each option on that site.

Go online!

There are tens of millions of small local businesses not yet online. Those who are online? They die deaths of quiet, no-traffic desperation.

Build a Web site that WORKS... one that delivers 100 times the benefits of a Yellow Pages ad, at one tenth of the cost.

I found a new website where you can submit a link for free. If the providers like your page, they will post it on their main page as a screen shot (it gets featured).
The best part is: You dont have to create an account!! Just post a link and a good description.
here is the link (silly name):
