You know, I've been asked this question too. It's extremely annoying in my opinion. What it seems like is that your boyfriend is denying the fact that you do love him or he doesn't even know what love feels like. People who ask such a question most likely don't have a clue what love is all about. When your boyfriend asks you this question, he's also emplying that there are some things deep inside him that he thinks isn't worthy of your love. Heck, he probably doesn't even love himself, unfortunately. If I were in your shoes, I would be like, "Do you even believe that I love you?" Or better off, ask him, "Do you love yourself?" Make your boyfriend think.

I don't think Love has a definite answer as to why, because if it did then we could later just "kinda turn it off" and Love someone else. Love is HOLISTIC--from the air that is breathed to the beat of the heart. Love is external--what we see, and internal--how that person is made up (thoughts, feelings, emotions) and how it affects the external and internal makeup of the person who loves another.

It should come from your heart. Do you really love him? Or is it just a crush? I personally won't say that I love someone unless I know that I absolutely love him. Just...tell him. If you really love him...it'll just come out.
