Because, my friend, like me, you don't have a creative bone in your body. A guy once told me, if you draw a picture, and the picture becomes what you are drawing, as opposed to having a picture in your head and duplicating on the paper, then you will never be able to draw. Guitar is the same. If you are letting your fingers go, and trying to make a song out of what comes off of them, you will never write a song. You must have the song in your head first, and make it happen on the guitar.

It's like anything musical, you can get better with practice. Keep working on the covers. The better you get technically, the more free you will be to write whatever comes to you. If you only know certain chords or progressions, it will take longer for your creative juices to flow (you haven't freed yourself from your own restraints, so to speak). Also, have you studied music theory at all? When you study other compositions at length, you will begin to piece things together for your own stuff. I know that a lot of people just shrug this off and would prefer to write by ear, but I'm telling you, if you aren't confident about your writing yet, a little education can go a long way.

Synyster Gates is on your checklist yet Chuck Schukdiner, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, Tony Iommi, Jeff Waters, and Alex Skolnick are not? appropriate 10 perfect steel Guitarists. a million. Chuck Schuldiner 2. John Petrucci 3. Steve Vai 4. Marty Freidman 5. Dave Mustaine 6. Jeff Waters 7. Joe Satriani 8. Alex Skolnick 9. Ol Drake 10. Tony Iommi Chuck and Jeff are very Skillful and their varieties are unique. have you ever heard of loss of life or Annihilator, Synyster Gates is mediocre and tries to play like Kirk Hammett, he's an undemanding Guitarist and all his solos sound the comparable. please tell me how can Synyster Gates be extra effective than Chuck and Jeff Waters provide me motives.

Well I'm a vocalist and at times i get writers block. Some times i can write when there's other music playing. it never sounds like the song playing but that works for me you should read more too then more words will be in your head. And if your in a band that's even better have a jam session it always works for me .It will come from the heart. But it is really hard.So don't quit!

I have the same problem Ive been playing for about 12 years now --- I can bust out jimi Hendrix and Metallica solos with no problems --
but when i try to write something it always sounds like the Laffy Taffy song

You can get better with practice if you have talent. Try getting a book on chord progressions and write songs to the chord progressions. Try "Ted Green's Chord Progressions" - it will keep you busy for a while!

i used to have the same problem
most songs aren't original, and are spin-offs of others
the way i do it is by thinking of a good riff in my head, and then transferring them note by note onto the guitar, or doing the same thing with keyboard
if you're in a band, it's good to just jam out, play anything you want, it's easy to come up with stuff that way

You have to come up with a workable formula first and then practice it. It also helps to have plenty of life experiences to aid in lyric writing.

well the best way is just to start strummin any of your made up tunes and try to sing to it anything. it doesnt really matter what you come up with but have you heard of the titles new artists are coming up with? Oh i like em but still theyre simple.
