The gel in diapers is called Polyacrylate gel, and it's pretty new, nobody knows long term effects of it as far as I could find on the web. Diapers are also contain a lot of dioxins from the bleaching process. I personally don't trust that both those things are healthy, but I'm not sure about the ingestion of the gel. Maybe call poison control, they might have more information on Polyacrylate gel.

Why not avoid the possibility all together and use cloth diapers?
I know, I know, they cause more laundry. Too bad. So you have to do 2 more loads of laundry a week. Big deal. Such a small sacrifice for the health and safety of your baby.
All that plastic, paper and chemicals against your baby's skin. That can't be good no matter if they are toxic or not.
Your baby will potty train sooner when wearing cloth diapers because they can feel the wetness and don't like it therefore they want to be out of diapers sooner.
Not to mention our landfills. I can't believe that the plastic, paper, chemicals and human waste going into our landfills is a good thing. The human waste breeds harmful bacteria that filters down into our drinking water, hmmmmm. . . . yummy! The diaper itself will take decades to decay.
Maybe I'll just pile them up in your backyard to see how long the last. That's what we do when we put them in the landfill, we pile them up in someone else's back yard.
Think about it. Isn't it your baby's health and comfort that should come first, not the convenience for you when it comes to changing the diaper?? Your baby should come first.
Good luck.

I had the same thing just happen to my 11 month old. I just called poison control. They said that the contents of the diaper are non-toxic and she's never had a call that turned out bad with a baby chewing on a diaper. However, she said that theoretically, since the diapers are made to swell with moisture, if they ingested a lot of it, it could swell and create a blockage. Therefore, you need to watch their breathing over the next couple of days, and to watch to make sure their belly isn't swelling. If so, take them to the ER immediately. I hope this helps someone! I couldn't find a lot of info online, so Poison Control really helped me.

Here is the maker of this "GEL" and they SAY this is non-toxic. But if baby apears to have any problems - GO to the emergency room where professionals can help. I cant believe all the stuff in babies diapers now-a-days. This is just un-believable to me. Babys taste everything, thier own feet, anything they see, including the family dog. Dont leave diapers out where baby can get to them and taste. and from the sounds of this stuff you should not have a whole lot of contact with it too. Let alone all the fragrance in them.

That happened with me one time, but only with a super absorbant pantiliner. But the pantiliner didn't explode, I just noticed it was all squishy so I opened it. It's basically unflavored jello, and it's non-toxic, and I would think the best way to get it out would be to re-wash everything in hot water, since hot water dissolves jello.

I was going to say that as long as you're not eating them you're probably safe, and then I read the rest of it.
As long as he didn't ingest much, you're probably good. Keep an eye on him, though. It's not very toxic, but it's not meant to be eaten, either. If he ate a good deal of it, you had better consult someone close to home there that would know, like a nurse you know or something.

I doubt it but I wouldn't let him chew on any more. I mean what if he choked on a piece of the cotton filling or a piece of the plastic from the diaper.
Buy him a teething ring.

Good question... I don't see why it would it has to be baby safe..although of course they were not meant to be in a babys mouth... My son gets his diapers all the time and puts them in his mouth... I never thought of that....

Supposedly not, for just that reason. I would still be cautious. If he gets sick take him to ER.
